Following Up LC2010 - More

Following on from the last BLOG entry, here are a few pics of the new tenancies inserted into the building beside the lane/driveway located next to the hotel. There is a new restaurant, 3 Monkeys Pizza, and a new coffee shop, Grinders. Both have been open for a few weeks and seem to be doing well.
Sophie and Megan, landscape architects from the VERGE office had a quick look at this area and came up with a rough concept that acknowledged the need to retain vehicular movement (although in a one-way system), improve pedestrian safety and improve pedestrian amenity - not to mention, make the whole place look a bit better!
They incorporated some of the LC2010 Green Team’s ideas and used the phenomenon of “pop-up retail” to assist in activating this new precinct and get the ball rolling for new shops and shoppers to inhabit this area. Download here.
The term “pop-up shops” was originally coined by Trendwatching.com (http://trendwatching.com/trends/POPUP_RETAIL.htm) and was applied to mainstream or emerging retail businesses that took over commercial or other spaces for temporary retail ‘events’.
The concept presented here borrows this term, but applies it to small, diverse, creative and interesting retail enterprises to occupy space and introduce new retail concepts. There have been a few examples of this recently in Brisbane - at Southbank and ‘The Fleet Store’ in the Wintergarden which was run by QUT fashion students - but the concept has been used throughout the US and UK over a number of years.

Follow Up To LC2010 At Stones Corner

In the last couple of months, one of the property owners at Stones Corner has modified his/her building to establish tenancies at ground level along one of the connecting lanes between Logan Road and Stoneham Street. It’s more of a car park really than a lane, but the idea is very reminiscent of that provided by the Green Team in our 2010 workshop.
Pictures will speak louder than words, so will endeavour to get some pics to post in the next week or so. From these, it will be self-evident of how improvements could be made to really activate the thoroughfare along which these new retail premises are located. The clue will be in the wall and pavement treatments and some of the other interventions suggested by the Green Team. See their work in LC2010/Outcomes.
